How Much Insulation Do I Need?

The amount of insulation your attic needs depends on your climate zone, your current R-value, and what’s already up there. Most homes need attic insulation between R-38 and R-60, and the fastest way to know exactly where yours stands is to have a technician measure your current depth and material type before adding anything new.

That number – R-value – is just a measure of how well insulation resists heat flow. The higher the number, the better the thermal barrier between your living space and whatever the weather is doing outside. Getting that number wrong in either direction costs you money: too little and your HVAC runs harder than it should; too much of the wrong type layered over old or damaged material and you can trap moisture, block ventilation, or spend on insulation that doesn’t perform the way the label suggests. The goal isn’t just “more.” It’s the right amount, the right material, installed correctly.

Why It Happens

Your attic never had enough insulation to begin with

Homes built before the 1980s were often insulated to standards that wouldn’t pass inspection today. If you pull down your attic hatch and can see the tops of your floor joists clearly, your insulation is almost certainly below the minimum recommended R-value for your climate zone. Joists buried under several inches of material are a better sign – visible joists are not.

Your existing insulation has settled or degraded

Blown-in insulation – cellulose or fiberglass – settles over time. A layer that was installed at the right depth 15 years ago may now measure an inch or two shallower, which translates directly into a lower effective R-value. If your energy bills have crept up without an obvious cause, settled insulation is one of the first things worth checking.

You have the wrong type of insulation for the application

Batts laid between rafters in an unventilated space, or old fiberglass over a vapor barrier in the wrong orientation – these are common situations where the material isn’t wrong on its own, but the installation method is working against the home. You can sometimes spot this from the attic hatch: mismatched materials, gaps along the edges of batts, or insulation that’s been pushed aside around old ductwork or fixtures.

A renovation or repair disturbed what was there

Electrical work, HVAC replacement, a new roof – any trade that spends time in your attic can move insulation around. It’s rarely malicious, just an inevitable side effect of working in a tight space. If you’ve had recent attic work done and your heating or cooling efficiency dropped afterward, walk the perimeter of the attic hatch opening and look for areas where the material looks thinner or displaced.

What to Do Right Now

  • Check the depth you can see from the hatch. You don’t need to climb in. Use a flashlight and look at the visible insulation near the opening. If you can clearly see the tops of the joists, flag it. If material looks thin along the eaves, flag that too. Take a photo while you’re there.
  • Look for any moisture, staining, or compressed insulation. Wet or water-stained insulation has lost a significant portion of its R-value and may need removal before new material goes in, not just a top-up. Don’t disturb it – just photograph it and let the technician assess.
  • Note where you feel drafts or temperature differences in the house. Rooms that are consistently colder in winter or hotter in summer than the rest of the house often point directly to the area of the attic above them. That pattern helps a technician prioritize during the assessment.
  • Do not attempt to add insulation yourself over old, unknown, or damaged material. Certain older homes contain insulation materials that require professional removal before anything new is added. If the existing material looks unusual – gray and crumbly, vermiculite-like granules, or fibrous in a way that doesn’t match standard fiberglass or cellulose – stop, close the hatch, and call a professional. Do not disturb it.
  • Pull out a recent energy bill and write down your square footage if you know it. This takes two minutes and saves time during the estimate call.

How We Fix It

When your local Laurel Attic Insulation team arrives, the first thing they do is an honest assessment of what’s already in your attic – current depth, material type, condition, and whether there’s anything underneath that needs to come out before new insulation goes in. That assessment drives everything: the recommended R-value, the right material for your specific attic configuration, and the install method.

For most homes, the answer is attic insulation – either blown-in or batt, using materials from brands like Owens Corning, Johns Manville, CertainTeed, or GreenFiber, matched to the job rather than to whatever happens to be on the truck. If there’s an air-sealing need – gaps around penetrations, bypasses at top plates – spray foam insulation from Icynene or Demilec handles those spots before the blanket layer goes on top. If old, damaged, or contaminated material is present, insulation removal comes first.

Most attic insulation jobs wrap up in a single visit. Before anything starts, you get a written price – that’s the number, not a range, not a guess. The work is backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we make it right, and that guarantee is delivered in writing with your digital invoice.
